Warsaw Shopping Tips

Helpful advice to enhance your shopping experience in the Polish capital.

Shopping Hours & Best Times

Most shopping malls in Warsaw are open from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM Monday through Saturday, and 10:00 AM to 9:00 PM on Sundays with shopping restrictions (only open on selected Sundays of the month). Smaller shops typically operate from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM.

For the best experience, avoid weekends at major malls if possible. Weekday mornings and early afternoons usually offer a more relaxed shopping atmosphere with fewer crowds.

Tax Refunds for Tourists

Non-EU visitors spending over 200 PLN in a single transaction can qualify for a VAT refund (tax-free shopping). Look for stores displaying the "Tax Free" or "Global Blue" logos.

Request a tax-free form at the time of purchase, and have it stamped by customs when leaving the EU. You can then receive your refund at the airport or by mail.

Local Payment Methods

Major credit cards are widely accepted in Warsaw, especially Visa and Mastercard. Many places also accept contactless payments, including Google Pay and Apple Pay.

It's still helpful to carry some cash (Polish Zloty - PLN) for small purchases at markets or independent shops. ATMs are readily available throughout the city.

Authentic Polish Souvenirs

For authentic Polish souvenirs, consider these traditional items:

  • Amber jewelry - Poland is famous for its Baltic amber
  • Bolesławiec pottery - distinctive hand-painted ceramics
  • Wycinanki - colorful paper cut-outs from folk traditions
  • Polish vodka or nalewki (traditional liqueurs)
  • Hand-embroidered linens or wooden folk art

Cepelia stores and the shops in the Old Town offer certified authentic Polish crafts, though prices may be higher than at markets.

Bargaining Culture

In most stores and shopping malls in Warsaw, prices are fixed and bargaining is not customary. However, at flea markets and some independent stalls (particularly at Koło Antique Market or Bazar na Kole), respectful negotiation is acceptable.

When bargaining at markets, start at about 30% below the asking price and negotiate in a friendly manner. Keep in mind that extreme bargaining may be considered disrespectful.
